Clean energy, the 24 trillion dollar investment opportunity

Posted on December 21, 2008

The quest to find cheaper, cleaner, and sustainable energy alternatives will be the next great investment opportunity, much like the internet was less than a decade a go. There will be a lot of winners and a lot of losers, and Im sure a bubble or two along the way. The one definite is that there will be a ton of money invested in this space. A top Deutsche Bank official was recently quoted:

“To do so will undoubtedly require a great deal of capital: the International Energy Agency estimates $45trn will have to be invested in clean energy alone over several decades.”

According to this guy, the recent economic collapse will push back the timing though:

“The challenging conditions in the financial markets are clearly being reflected in the wider economy, which is slowing down all over the world.

“Over the short term, this is likely to slow investment in virtually every industrial sector, including energy. Some investors will no doubt claim that alternative energy has no future. However, I believe this will be a temporary phenomenon and we can look forward to even higher levels of investment in clean energy in the future than ever before.

The whole article is interesting reading, and is probably worth a read.
