Seeking Alpha takes a look at the recent performance of some investments that track different ways to play carbon trading. You’d think with all the carbon cap and trade talk from the Obama administration would have provided a bit of a boost. It didnt. It looks like investors still care about fundamentals, which we know is not good in the carbon credits space.
The Global Carbon Trading Index has lost about 15% of its market value in the past five weeks to a level of 18,497. Initial enthusiasm for the space (with the election of President Obama) has faded given the realities of a global economic slowdown and bear market for stocks. Read more
Carbon Trading: The rise of a new asset class

An Australian website has a nice little primer on my favorite asset class - carbon:
The growth of emissions trading schemes will increase the need for investors to assess how material carbon is and how it might impact the bottom line of companies.
Companies are increasingly evaluating the impact of carbon pricing in their operations, risk management plans and broader corporate strategies.

The quest to find cheaper, cleaner, and sustainable energy alternatives will be the next great investment opportunity, much like the internet was less than a decade a go. There will be a lot of winners and a lot of losers, and Im sure a bubble or two along the way. The one definite is that there will be a ton of money invested in this space. A top Deutsche Bank official was recently quoted:
“To do so will undoubtedly require a great deal of capital: the International Energy Agency estimates $45trn will have to be invested in clean energy alone over several decades.”
According to this guy, the recent economic collapse will push back the timing though:
“The challenging conditions in the financial markets are clearly being reflected in the wider economy, which is slowing down all over the world. Read more
CF Partners to launch carbon hedge fund

Reuters:
London-based CF Partners will launch early next year a new 50 million euro ($70.06 million) hedge fund aiming to profit from volatility in carbon markets.
The European Union’s emissions trading scheme may be a surer investment following final EU endorsement on Wednesday of climate goals reaching out to 2020, and recent volatility in commodities markets has opened shorting opportunities.
“To date in the carbon space the majority of the players from a fund point of view have been long-only guys,” said Simon Glossop, one of CF’s founders. “That’s been a workable model up to this year, but carbon has now become an asset class in its own right instead of a compliance tool.” Read more
